Clean Monday

Clean Monday

What does cultural reclamation taste like? With this artwork I introduced three other Greek-Americans to the Orthodox tradition Clean Monday, the start of the Lenten season. It’s a public holiday in Greece and is celebrated with a meal of traditional foods that fit within the fasting restrictions of Lent. For this project, the four of us hosted simultaneous dinner parties, cooking some of the same foods. In this we were joined not only with each other but with the Greek diaspora celebrating Clean Monday around the globe. As someone who is not Orthodox Christian but adopted this holiday as an adult, I set out to use art to help other Greek-Americans connect with our culture and with others in the omogenia (Greek diaspora).

The images for the cards were sourced from the archives of the National Hellenic Museum in Chicago. Below are a few images that I incorporated into the recipe, music, and Lady Lent cards.

Below are photos from the four simultaneously hosted dinner parties. They took different shapes, from a family dinner to a gathering of friends.
